Should CEOs Blog?

“Should CEOs blog?” by Tom Nardacci

I was at a PRSA event and a colleague asked me if I thought CEOs should blog? This is a topic that has been debated and discussed for several years now and there is no shortage of opinions on the topic.

Yes, CEOs should blog if their blogging is strategic and it helps them to communicate to their target audiences. Blogs can be very effective. You should determine, however, if it is worth the effort and the CEOs time commitment based on the company’s needs and the audience you are trying to reach.

Involvement of your public relations department should be a must.

CEO's should blog if they are going to dedicate the time to keep up with what is being said. In order for a blog to be successful it should be updated at least several times a week. If the ceo cannot make time to actively and candidly write then it is not worth starting.

CEO's should also be prepared to accept the good and the bad if they blog. If someone disagrees or potentially contradicts what the ceo is saying, it cannot be pulled. It is sometimes hard for corporate America to embrace the openness of blogs.

For execution, the CEO must write the content. If the ceo leaves it up to a communications staff member and then heads off to a cocktail party without reading the blog before and knowing what's up, it could potentially be an embarrassing moment.
